PSD format compatibility and file limitations

Understand PSD preview support, restricted editing, font substitutions and why some Photoshop files remain read-only or unsupported.

Open PSD Editor

Viewing is not the same as editing

The original merged preview is used where available. It can show effects that this lightweight editor cannot reconstruct. A successful preview does not mean the document is safe to edit.

A deliberately small editing scope

Editing is limited to simple RGB, 8-bit documents that pass the engine’s checks. Complex blending, masks, clipping, adjustments, vector shapes, smart objects and unsupported text formatting keep a file read-only. The workbench displays the applicable reason.

Unsupported inputs

This first version does not promise PSB, CMYK, Lab, indexed color, 16-bit or 32-bit editing. Oversized files, oversized layers, excessive layer counts and malformed data are rejected. Limits protect browser memory; they are not a statement that Photoshop cannot open the file.

Export and typography

PNG and JPG are flattened outputs. Text may use a replacement font and may not match Photoshop’s layout. Save a copy of your original file and inspect the output before use. Do not use this tool for color-critical print proofing.

Browser limits

Files must be 50 MiB or smaller, no more than 4096 pixels on either side and no more than 300 layers. The combined layer pixel budget is also checked. Parsing runs in a separate worker and stops after 30 seconds. Text replacements are limited to 500 characters. A device can still run short of memory within these limits.

When you need Photoshop

For print color management, advanced smart objects, exact type fidelity, complex filters or professional PSD round trips, use Photoshop or another editor with the required feature support.
